2012 Short Films

This year the YES Film Festival is delighted to present a diverse selection of 9 short films from around the world. Two of these will screen with feature films that complement them, while the other 7 will be shown in this year’s short film program, “TALL TALES, SHORT FILM.”

Screening with WID WINNER AND THE SLIPSTREAM [See 2012 Feature Films]

Paul, a man down on his luck, enlists his stepson, Freddie, to push their broken down car to a junkyard – to save the towing fee. As they navigate their way through city streets, they also must navigate through their own troubled relationship. A perfectly delightful and touching film. Director Joe Lyons will conduct a post-film discussion of “SALVAGING.”

THE SECRET FRIEND(15 min)
Directed by Flavio Alves
USA

Screening with NATHAN AND THE LUTHIER [See 2012 Feature Films]

Anna, a reclusive, elderly widow, played by Viola Harris (Sex and the City, The Other Guys, Deconstructing Harry), lives in quiet desperation until she begins receiving daily calls from a silent stranger. An odd and mysterious friendship evolves, and empty days are given new hope. But then the calls abruptly end.

NORTH ATLANTIC (15 min)

Portugal, United Kingdom

An isolated air-traffic controller on an island of the Azores archipelago receives a transatlantic emergency signal from a lost plane. The controller realizes that his is the only voice that can help the lone pilot through the night.

WOLF CALL (12 min)
Director: Rob Underhill

It is 1956. The previous year, the mutilated body of 14-year old Emmett Till was found in a Mississippi river. William Bradford Huie of Look magazine sits down with the two men acquitted of the boy’s murder. Based on a true story. Director Rob Hill will conduct a post-film discussion.

WAR STORY (19 min)

Iran

Two thirsty soldiers crouch at opposite ends of a minefield. They can see each other, and also a water jug sitting in the middle of the field. Each knows he must kill the other to get a hold of the precious water.

THE DANCE (10 min)

Alex wants to be what he thinks Jenny wants him to be. So he tries all manner of clothes and tricks to get her attention. This is a sweet comedy about love, with no dialog.

A worn and disillusioned teddy bear named Awful tries to escape from his owner (Luna) and her constant attention and endearments in this clever, funny tale.

When Alma loses everything, she moves into a nursing home. But this nursing home is special: a cat with the uncanny ability to predict death prowls the halls. Will he set his sights on Alma and her newfound friend, Eunice?

Nada Assad is an American-Muslim who has one dream: to become an undercover detective. Her religious obligations clash with her duties as an officer when she tackles the mystery of a little girl’s stolen pig. Hilarious.
