Victims and perpetrators of Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war revive an ancient practice called fambul tok (family talk) to try to heal from the atrocities committed neighbor-on-neighbor, family-member-on-family- member, in an unprecedented mission to bring the villages back together. In the ceremonies, individuals tell their horrific stories of rape and massacre, confess, and use rituals to reach forgiveness. This is a culture that believes true justice lies in redemption and healing of individuals through forgiveness – a idea almost unconceivable to the Western mind.
